ONE in seven crashes in Southwark is a hit-and-run, figures have
revealed. Campaigners now want bobbies on the beat to patrol roads to
catch uninsured drivers. It comes after Southwark was revealed to be
in the top 10 per cent of boroughs in the country for illegal
drivers.
London Assembly member Jenny Jones wants cops to focus on uninsured
drivers on their beats. She said: "The point is that we still have
more deaths from road crashes than shootings and stabbings in
Southwark. "We need a lot of enforcement to clamp down on uninsured
drivers and we're not getting it at the moment. "This is the sort of
crime that seasoned criminals commit, so I think cops should be
monitoring traffic as part of their neighbourhood patrols." In
Walworth and Elephant & Castle 17.6 per cent of drivers are uninsured
- three and a half times the national average of five per cent. In
Camberwell it is 19.2 per cent. According to the Motor Insurers Bureau
the high number of uninsured drivers means that drivers in Camberwell
are paying an extra £30 on their insurance. In neighbouring Brixton
and Stockwell a massive 44.2 per cent of vehicles are not insured.
Safety campaigners say this is why 16.8 per cent of people in
Southwark and 13.7 per cent in Lambeth flee after a crash.
