300 CROOKED COPS NICKED IN ONE YEAR
And some are still on duty..
By Jake Morris
ALMOST 300 police officers have been arrested in one year for crime,
The People can reveal.

The offences - ranging from drink-driving and criminal damage to
assault, fraud, perverting justice, bodily harm, child porn and rape -
will shock lawful citizens.

One officer is awaiting trial for attempted murder, some have been
jailed after conviction but controversially others are still on duty.

At least 285 officers were arrested by colleagues last year according
to figures obtained by The People under the Freedom Of Information Act.
Six forces refused to tell us.

LONDON'S Metropolitan force - biggest in Britain with 31,000 officers -
had most offenders with 47 getting a caution or conviction. Most were
drink-driving off-duty and 26 resigned or were sacked.

WEST YORKSHIRE were the next biggest offenders with 19 arrested.

GREATER MANCHESTER nicked 18 of their own colleagues but refused to
give details.

DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY have a sergeant charged with trying to murder his
ex-wife.

Another eight officers around Britain were arrested for rape or sexual
assault.

Tory MP Nigel Evans said: "Every profession has a rotten apple but this
is a truckload. The new Home Secretary John Reid needs to tackle this
urgently."

The Home Office said a new police Code of Professional Standards was
being drawn up to improve the disciplinary system.

I suppose it depends on how many Police Officers there are and whether the
above figure includes every rank, etc. A figure without context is useless
(or pointless, not sure which!)

I believe the figure to be around the 141,000 mark for sworn officers of all
ranks, so in context around 300 is a very small figure 0.02% of the police,
however as I cant be bothered to read the article, as the OP's post fails to
state how many were arrested, AND as a result of investigation were actually
cleared of any criminal offence, either at the investigation, the CPS
consideration or at the court stage ??

As for a MP calling a figure a truckload, there's a profession thats whiter
than white !!!!!!

Its the corrupt police officers who are not arrested that we should
worry about.

I'd be interested, if anyone has the figures to hand, to hear what
percentage of 'normal' people are (on average) arrested for a crime in any
given year.

A comparison would be most interesting. Especially given that we ought to
allow an offset for the fact that most plod will, most of the time, give
other plod the benefit of the doubt. Probably even when there isn't any.

In 2004/05 the total was 1,353,800 according to

But a lot of those "arrests" will be non-arrests, i.e. won't result in
any charges or a court appearance.

Of course, but similarly a lot of the 300 arrests of police officers
will also not result in charges. There wouldn't be any point in
comparing *arrests* of ordinary citizens with *prosecutions* of policce
officers. You have to compare like with like.

Yes, of course. You are right.
