OK, this is just a factual query, no reference to real politics. I've
read the book a few times and seen the movie. I watched it again a while
back, and something in the film made me think I'd missed something "key"
in the book.
The Oceanian province of Airstrip One is a world of perpetual war. They
were also under constant surveillance by black helicopters among other
things. In the movie, there was an air raid scene with bombs hitting the
streets and people rushing for shelters. In amongst the turmoil, one of
their own black helicopters crashed & burned on the streets and people
looked on dumbfounded.
Now, I'm wondering if the suggestion here was that there was no state of
war at all in reality, and that the whole perpetual and ever-changing
war thing was all just staged by The Party to keep the society
functioning in a wartime situation - hard times, long hours, working to
save us all etc. The war was being made to look actual by The Party
using its own military to bomb its own people?
Hoping someone with a deeper insight into the work might be able to
clarify this.
