Tory MPs are demanding a public apology from the Labour Party after it
emerged members, including ministers, took part in an auction for a copy of
the Hutton report into the death of Dr David Kelly which was autographed by
Cherie Blair.
According to a Commons motion tabled by Peterborough's Stewart Jackson, the
event took place at the Arts Club in Mayfair last week and raised £400 for
party coffers.
The motion says the event was "in appalling bad taste, arrogant and crassly
insensitive in seeking to make money, albeit indirectly, through hawking, as
a novelty item, an official Government report into the death of a public
servant".
It "regrets the distress caused to the family and friends of the late Dr
Kelly; and calls on the Labour Party to apologise for such tasteless and
offensive conduct and to donate the money raised to an appropriate charity".

700 escaped open jails last year Around 700 prisoners absconded from open
prisons last year, according to the head of the Prison Service.
Phil Wheatley made the disclosure as the Home office came under fire after a
raft of allegations about its work.
Tory David Davis says ministers "took their eye off the ball" after it
emerged 393 offenders had absconded from Leyhill open prison since 1999.
But Mr Wheatley says over three quarters of absconders will have been
rearrested and returned to custody.
'Risk' of open system
He said the rate of prisoner absconders was falling and was at its lowest
level since 1999. In 2005-6, 693 prisoners absconded, compared with 831 in
2004
Criminal records mix-up uncovered Some 2,700 people have been wrongly
labelled as criminals by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), it has emerged.
The mistakes have led to some people being turned down for jobs.
The Home Office said the errors arose when personal details were similar to
those of people with a conviction, but were "a tiny proportion of cases".

Murderers walk out of open prison More than 20 convicted murderers absconded
from Leyhill Open Prison near Bristol in the last five years, according to
new figures.
The information came to light after Yeovil MP David Laws tabled
parliamentary questions to Home Office minister Gerry Sutcliffe.
Six rapists were also among those who have absconded from Leyhill since
1999.
The figures follow a BBC investigation which showed more than 300 inmates
absconded in the past three years.
Mr Sutcliffe said: "As soon as a prisoner is found to have absconded from an
open prison the local police are informed immediately.

Charles Clarke has apologised for the release of more than 1,000 foreign
prisoners who should have been deported at the end of their sentence.
The number includes three murderers and nine rapists, Home Office figures
show.

tracked down, "but we are working on that very energetically".
He said the failure was "deeply regrettable" and conceded that people will
be angered by the oversight.
The home secretary said the prisoners, who were released between February
1999 and March 2006, should have been considered for deportation or removal.
So far the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) has located 107 of
the total, leading to 20 deportations.

A MILLIONAIRE businessman has lifted the lid on how Labour is
concealing money given by wealthy backers who are then nominated for
peerages.
Labour has raised up to £10m from donors but has hidden the payments
because they were made as loans, which do not have to be declared.
Three of the donors were put forward for peerages by Tony Blair last
autumn.

Poverty rate 'rose under Labour' Relative poverty in the UK may have risen
since 1997, rather than fallen, says the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
The usual measure is the proportion of households whose income is less than
60% of the median household income.
That suggests that the poverty rate fell from 25% to 22% of households
between 1996/97 and 2002/03.
But the IFS says that if household spending is measured instead, then over
the same period of time the poverty rate rose from 20% to 22%.
Using spending as a measure, the IFS also finds that the poverty rate among
children increased
credits they were not entitled to, BBC News has learned.
Officials decided they did not need to prove they were eligible. All they
needed to make a claim was a national insurance (NI) number.
But on 1 June it emerged that thousands of workers suspected of being
illegal immigrants were given NI numbers.
Between April 2003 and December 2004, 2,700 families were wrongly paid
credits by the Inland Revenue.
The credits each could have been worth more than £10,000 in some cases.
Overpayments to families have averaged £1,000 a year so if all the 2,700
families had claimed for the whole of this time it would amount to millions.

UK budget deficit hits new record The UK has posted a record budget deficit
for the public sector in May.
The May current deficit was £8.7bn, £1bn higher than a year ago, the Office
for National Statistics (ONS) said.
Public Sector Net Borrowing (PSNB) - which includes capital investment -
showed a deficit of £10bn, the second highest figure on record.
Rising government spending was mainly responsible, the ONS said, although
lower corporate tax receipts also contributed.
Another measure of public borrowing, the public sector net cash requirement,
reached £7.4bn, £2.3bn higher than one year ago, and the highest for May on
record.

Tory MPs are demanding a public apology from the Labour Party after it
emerged members, including ministers, took part in an auction for a copy of
the Hutton report into the death of Dr David Kelly which was autographed by
Cherie Blair.
According to a Commons motion tabled by Peterborough's Stewart Jackson, the
event took place at the Arts Club in Mayfair last week and raised £400 for
party coffers.
The motion says the event was "in appalling bad taste, arrogant and crassly
insensitive in seeking to make money, albeit indirectly, through hawking, as
a novelty item, an official Government report into the death of a public
servant".
It "regrets the distress caused to the family and friends of the late Dr
Kelly; and calls on the Labour Party to apologise for such tasteless and

700 escaped open jails last year Around 700 prisoners absconded from open
prisons last year, according to the head of the Prison Service.
Phil Wheatley made the disclosure as the Home office came under fire after a
raft of allegations about its work.
Tory David Davis says ministers "took their eye off the ball" after it
emerged 393 offenders had absconded from Leyhill open prison since 1999.
But Mr Wheatley says over three quarters of absconders will have been
rearrested and returned to custody.

He said the rate of prisoner absconders was falling and was at its lowest
level since 1999. In 2005-6, 693 prisoners absconded, compared with 831 in

from Leyhill Open Prison near Bristol in the last five years, according to
new figures.
The information came to light after Yeovil MP David Laws tabled
parliamentary questions to Home Office minister Gerry Sutcliffe.
Six rapists were also among those who have absconded from Leyhill since
1999.
The figures follow a BBC investigation which showed more than 300 inmates
absconded in the past three years.

Poverty rate 'rose under Labour' Relative poverty in the UK may have risen
since 1997, rather than fallen, says the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
The usual measure is the proportion of households whose income is less than
60% of the median household income.
That suggests that the poverty rate fell from 25% to 22% of households
between 1996/97 and 2002/03.
But the IFS says that if household spending is measured instead, then over
the same period of time the poverty rate rose from 20% to 22%.

needed to make a claim was a national insurance (NI) number.
But on 1 June it emerged that thousands of workers suspected of being
illegal immigrants were given NI numbers.
Between April 2003 and December 2004, 2,700 families were wrongly paid
credits by the Inland Revenue.
The credits each could have been worth more than £10,000 in some cases.
Overpayments to families have averaged £1,000 a year so if all the 2,700
families had claimed for the whole of this time it would amount to millions.

for the public sector in May.
The May current deficit was £8.7bn, £1bn higher than a year ago, the Office
for National Statistics (ONS) said.
Public Sector Net Borrowing (PSNB) - which includes capital investment -
showed a deficit of £10bn, the second highest figure on record.
Rising government spending was mainly responsible, the ONS said, although
lower corporate tax receipts also contributed.
Another measure of public borrowing, the public sector net cash requirement,
reached £7.4bn, £2.3bn higher than one year ago, and the highest for May on
record.
